Scratch-built Counter-Rotating Helicopter

Scratch-built Counter-Rotating Helicopter

IRCHA also brings some interesting self-designed projects to marvel over. This is Jim Ryan from Cincinnati, OH with his counter rotating and inter meshing prototype helicopter. Jim not only designed this helicopter, but also made all the CNC parts, including the gears. He’s using a Spektrum receiver with Beast X and Digi-Mix 3 for control and stabilization. Notice the 5° coning angle on each rotorhead for proper clearance as one rotor disk intersects the other. So far Jim has four test flights and is looking forward to mounting a suitable fuselage. 1. Very nicely done.

Were you able to get close up pictures of the Russian full size one to see how they did it regarding rotor timing?

Please put up some videos of it in the air. It’s nice to see someone doing something outside the box.

  2. Hi Drew,

Thanks for your kind remarks about my project. Actually, this isn’t a Russian design (the Kamov helis are coaxial). This will be a Kaman HH-43B Huskie, a rescue heli that saw service in the early days of Vietnam.

I’ll post video as soon as I complete a few revisions.
