Mr. Top Gun #1—Bob Fiorenze 1989

Bob Fiorenze built his magnificent McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet starting with a pre-production Yellow Aircraft kit, and it took about six months worth of 14-hours-a-day effort to complete. It’s just over 8-feet long with a 6-foot wingspan, weighs 27 pounds and was powered by a pair of Dynamax fans driven by two O.S. .77 ducted-fan engines. The fuselage is made of molded fiberglass and Bob used a material called Fascal to cover over all the balsa surfaces. Automotive finishing materials were used for the paint job, including acrylic lacquer color coats. One of the model’s impressive features was the use of electric wheel brakes. The most difficult part of the model’s construction for Bob was the retractable landing gear system which included 10 sequencing gear doors. One channel is used for gear operation; the doors are opened by springs and closed with pull cables. Three servos are used for the door sequencing alone. Though this type of attention to detail is common place today, for its day, this achievement was most noteworthy. Bob also won the 1988 U.S. Scale Masters Championships with his impressive Hornet.

Here’s how the rest of the competition stacked up for the 1989 Top Gun Scale Invitational.
