Road to Top Gun — Rene Alvarez — F4U Corsair

Road to Top Gun — Rene Alvarez — F4U Corsair

This year, Rene Alvarez is bringing his F4U Corsair to Top Gun as his Expert Class entry. The model, which took two years to build, is a highly modify Meister-Scale Corsair with operating flaps, canopy, operational position lights, all panel lines and tons of simulated rivets and screws, also there is a simulated brake system on the main wheels. The control surfaces and part of the wing is covered with cloth (Solartex) simulated rib stitching and Pink-It tape.

The Corsair uses a JR 9303 radio radio with high end JR and Hitec servos and A123 batteries from Electrodynamics, Smart-Fly Power Expander with optical kill switch, one for the ignition and the other for the fuel pump. To make things simple I am using the Electro Dynamics EDR-102 One-Click Multi-Connex, this makes the four flap servos and two ailerons a snap to put together. The paint is Klass-Kote matched to the exact Federal Standards color of the Corsair. The kill flags, pilot’s name and aircraft name came from Aeroloft.

For power a Moki 180cc 5 cylinder radial with a three bladed 28″ Solo Prop. And last but the must important part of the realism, the Best Pilot Figure of Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, Lyle went over and beyond to make sure the pilot figure was finish for the 12 O’Clock Event, which the model won the Critic’s Choice Runner-Up Award. This model is a replica of the aircraft markings use for the publicity event in 1943.
