Online Exclusive Product Review: Epilog 40Watt Zing 24 Laser Cutter

By: Gerry Yarrish

Our RC hobby is a tool and workbench kind of activity. Once beyond the basics modelers begin to invest more time and effort with their models. Steadily a lifelong collection of tools develops. From specialty mini clamps, razor planes and X-Acto knives, to more serious power tools such as belt sanders, drill presses and metal lathes, the serious RC modeler constantly adds to his workshop and develops into skilled craftsman. It’s also ...

  1. Gerry,

What accessories or options did you get with the laser? I’m thinking of sprining for one this fall.

    Thanks,

    James

    1. Hi James. I think you will find the Zing 24 a very impressive machine. I tested the unit over a 4 month period and it was equipped with the honeycomb vac table to hold thin material flat down, and the vacuum/filter cabinet (optional) with hand-held remote on/off control. As I mentioned in the online review you can run the Zing with a separate shop vac/air filtration system if your shop already has one simply by connecting the cutter with a 4 inch flex hose to your system. Everything else is ready to run. The only issues I had with the whole setup procedure was with my laptop. You have to setup the proper ports so your cutter and computer can communicate with each other. Epilog customer and tech support are awesome to work with
      good luck!

  2. Dearest Mommy,

I know what I want for Christmas this year!

  3. I’m not sure where you are getting your info, but good topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more. Thanks for magnificent info I was looking for this info for my mission.

    1. Actually, I got all this information by running the Zing 24 laser-cutter in my workshop for several months. All the photos I took while running the unit. I made several (dozens) of test cuts using various materials. Speed of cut and the power setting for the laser beam greatly affect the quality of the finished cut. A great tool everyone serious about RC would love to have in their shop.

  4. Hello great artical. Im coureous have you tried the Zing 24 out on leather?

    1. Lewis, I use a zing 24 30 watt machine and it works great on leather, check out some of the work I have done with the laser on my FaceBook page.

    1. Hi Johan. thanks for your comments. That’s the catch… Laser Cutters relie on CAD drawings for the most part to produce parts. They go hand in hand. I do not know of any sources for parts drawings. You might want to try the http://www.radiocontrolzone.com forum and register there and ask for comments there. Maybe someone can help out. Cheers,
      Gerry

  6. Does anyone know the price for this system and I’m very interested in engraving wood gun stocks and wine glasses. Can the Zing 24 do this? Last question, is size the ONLY difference between both zing models?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. The zing 16 x 12 cannot be fitted with the rotary additional attachment so you’d need the zing 24 to do any cylindrical engraving or cutting the next model up the helix mini has servo motors rather than stepper motors. Gives them higher travel speeds and a flatter torque curve for better results on curves. Going from say 18in/s to 40in/s good for production but not really needed for hobby work

  7. hi Gerry,

Can u send me design of each part of the airplane?

  8. Depending on what type of file the laser uses ,DXF OR TRUE CAD FILES. There are many pieces of software out there that will convert a scanned jpg or bmp to a dxf to import to your cad system or directly to the machine. I have scanned blue prints converted them and scaled to the size that I need. One such software is Vextractor, it is pretty easy to use.

  9. I am tahir maute of marawi city, Mindanao (Philippines), i have a small business, making most on personalizing items or customizing items. i would like to have laser cutter or that can engrave image or text on wood or acrylic surface. asking favor how can i avail that machine by installment basis, or any procedure? i don’t have much or enough money to cash or fully paid that machine.

  10. Gerry, you’re awesome!

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I’ve been looking for a way to create tiny peices for my greeting cards, without Xacto-ing 100s of them.

I don’t want to assume, but this will laser cut through inches of paper sheets.

Thanks again, your insights are helpful and delivery of detail is very concise. Much appreciated!

  11. I have access to a Zing 24 50W laser cutter (i step up fro the one reviewed here), and by following the power cut settings above, I have not been able to cut through a lousy piece of 3/32″ hobby plywood. thelaser just seems to go 1/4 or 1/2 depth of the wood and never all the way through.

I’ve tried the 30/30 setting, 40/30, 30/40, 10/100, 100/10, 50/50, 70/20, 20/70 and tons more and have yet to actually have the laser cut through the wood in one pass!! the Frequency I am using is 500, vector only.

Anyone have a suggestion as to what settings to use for 3/32 and 1/16 plywood?

  12. Gerry, thanks for the well done review.

For G$, what frequency did you find worked best?

    Thanks

  13. quite interesting im using zing 24 hw cn i get various templates of different planes to be assembled using balsa wood

  14. Would this be a good laser for engraving on 2 to 4 foot long boards that are 4 inches to 12 inches wide. Would there be a better alternative for that type work. Talking about engraving letters on wood mainly.
