One hundred years ago this year, 18 model airplane clubs competed in the three events that comprised the 1915 National Model Aeroplane Competition, with hopes of winning the Henry S. Villard Trophy. The Academy of Model Aeronautics has plans to reenact this event and celebrate its centennial.
Participants will have the opportunity to build a Free Flight fantasy club worthy of taking home the Villard Trophy. After extensive research in Aerial Age Weekly, AMA has been able to provide the names and results of the modelers who competed in the original contest in 1915.
AMA will post the competitors who competed in each of the three events in the online competition weekly, and participants will choose four of the competitors to join their fantasy club. Each competitor will win points based on how well he or she places in the reenacted 1915 contest. The total of all the points is the fantasy score for that particular contest.
The competitors and scorecards for the first event, Hand Launched Distance, were posted on July 16, 2015, and the information will be updated weekly.
Click here to get started. Don’t forget to share your fantasy club on social media by using the hashtag #FantasyFreeFlight.
