What really caught our eye was the combination of exciting flying and a few planes being equiped with mini video cameras to get the exciting air-to-air and air-to-ground action. We agree this “in-your-face” event is not for the timid.  The aerial combat vehicle of choice was the 55-inch Grim Reaper Combat Wing and we have to say, these guys take their fun seriously! What do you think? Great Fun or Too Dangerous? We want to hear from you…

  1. Coolest thing EVER!!!!!!

  2. Great Fun or Too Dangerous? As a participant, it’s definitely BOTH at times. All pilots assume the risk inherent in these Full Contact RC sports.

    It’s not for everyone.

But it is a certainly a blast for those who participate. And I’d say of the major sports I do (Waterskiing, Biking, Skateboarding, and Full contact RC) — full contact RC is easily the least risky to my health.

    Easily.

  3. nothing clams my nerves like full contact RC combat. While I fly the smaller Assasin, it calms my soul to see a plane faling helplessly back to mother earth. No doctor can prescribe that kind of medication.

  4. I see Full Contact (ZAGI) Combat is still going strong 10 years later. The SS radios are making it a lot more fun (Target Rich Environment).

  5. That looks like a ball! Dangerous? Maybe the flightline could have been a little farther back, but it’s in a perfect location for that kind of event (middle of nowhere). I think I’m in love.

  6. Does anyone know what kind of camera was used for the video?

    1. This is all GoPro footage. Not sure if it was the Hero or Hero2- I think he still has both

  7. Definitely a cool event. Someone should design a Combat Federation with local, regional, and national fly-offs! That would be cool! There could be single, teams, and squadron divisions! I could see this turning into a sanctioned RC sport!

  8. Rc flying is spose 2 b fun & chalageing. I have been flying 4 30+ years, more rewarding than sex. This hobby is very expensive, I just cant see me perposley destorying my aircraft like that.

  9. I have been going to this event for a couple years now. I can say the first time I went to watch I was hooked. It is a lot of fun. I have a couple wings in the video and am bringing a new one this year. Getting a “Hit” just puts a smile on your face. As far as destroying aircraft, all my aircraft are still in one piece and haven’t replaced anything on them. They are built from EPP foam and can take a real beating. I did get knocked out of the sky once and my servo popped out. I just hot glued it back in and off I went. Another had his wing broken in half and it was flying an hour or two later.

Here is a video of one of these combat wings being abused.

  10. This is just the sort of new sport to get thousands of young video gamers, with their lighting fast reflaxes, out to the field and away from their x-boxes. Great for the kids and great for our sport.
It seems that that the average age of the flyers at my club is about 60. That is not good for longevity of our sport. My club recently had a group of cub scouts out flying on buddy boxes. It was great fun for all and left a lasting impression on some of these young minds. We need to do some PR and get our sport in the news and television like MTV. .

  11. Nitro billy says flying is better than sex??????

Buddy you must be one boring guy. Sorry for your partner!!

Combat is awsome. Especially if you do it with gliders on a slope

  12. If done properly, full contact combat is no more dangerous than any other type of flying. Considering the average combat model is made of EPP foam and weighs around 3lbs or less, I’d say that it is probably more safe (for both the pilots and the spectators) than a lot of the “in your face” 3D events that I have seen. Although my club has only relatively recently (less than a year) started flying full contact combat, we are completely and totally addicted to it.

  13. As for destroying aircraft…choosing the right model makes all the difference. The Grim Reaper mentioned in the article and the Assassin (both by CrashTest Hobby) are purpose built for combat. They can take an unbelievable beating and keep on going with only minor, if any, repairs.
