Giant DC-3 Dakota – 18 years old and still flying!

Owner and pilot Dave Johnson notes that his 1/5-scale Dakota is 18 years old, with a white polystyrene foam fuselage and outer wing panels sheeted with balsa, then covered with Solartex and sprayed with automotive paint. The center wing section is all wood for strength. Powered by two Zenoah 62cc gas engines, the giant airliner has certainly held up well over the years! Thanks to Pete and Dean Coxon for taking this great video and posting it to YouTube.

  1. Does anyone
know the dimensions of this plane?

  2. Simply put, OUTSTANDING!!!!!

  3. Outstanding model and realistic flight. I only wish there had been a camera in the cockpit for a pilot’s view. (-:

  4. What a nice looking airplane and still looks fantastic after all those years.

  5. best video of flite outstanding

  6. Hope he learned something from the video i.e. Left aileron fluttering at outboard hinge near left tip. Otherwise, ,impressive. If that flutter is not corrected, it could spell disaster.

  7. Great flyer. I flew as flight radioman on an LC-47H in the Antarctic, in New Zealand and in the U.S. for nearly 4 years in the 1960s, while in the Navy. Loved the aircraft and flight characteristics. Hope to build a model with skis and configured for Antarctic flights.

  8. Cool airplane! BUT -taking off directly from the pits like that? Seriously poor form, and especially dangerous.
