Many of you may not know this, but each year at the Top Gun Scale Invitational at Paradise Field in Lakeland, FL, several of the contestants as well as the staff and press, get together and have a mass-launch for scale rubber powered model airplanes. Most are built using stick and tissue construction and many are made using kits. A few hearty folk, like MAN contributor and part of the crew that will be covering Top Fun this year, Carl Layden, go the extra mile and scratch build their free flight planes.
Carl started with a set of scale drawings and is Shop-engineering his “Lanc” as he goes!

This is indeed a totally scratch-built design. Carl even made a vacuum-forming box to make several of the parts for the Lancaster. Stay tuned for more updates… this one is going to be a doozy!
Congratulations, a great challenge, successes

Thanks for your kind words Jamie. I hope to start test flights soon. More photos to come.
Can I Buy Your Plan
Hi Victor,
The Lancaster was constructed without plans, using an old 3-view drawing, upsizing some of the outlines using a photocopier, figuring out how to build it one piece at a time. While I haven’t considered creating a plan, with enough interest I could be convinced. It would probably make for a good indoor a/c using 4 small brushless motors too.
Thanks for showing an interest,
Carl
