Road to Top Gun — Reconstructed Corsair

Road to Top Gun — Reconstructed Corsair

It is always good to hear when an RC airplane is resurrected from a crash. And this year, Dino DiGiorgio will be flying a rebuilt F4U Corsair in Pro Am Propeller class. Dino comments, “Our model started out as a rebuild from a major crash by Heinz Ayvaz. The previous owner had trashed the model and was not going to rebuild it so Heinz took possession of the damaged CARF Models Corsair’s remains.

The rebuild started about a year ago and required a good bit of glass work and reinforcing.

The Corsair will have a fully detailed cockpit and a pneumatic operated sliding canopy. Other features included operational cowl flaps, functional Navigation, a retractable landing light, and simulated machine gun sound and machine gun flash by Omnionics.

Servos are all JR 8711 servos for flight controls, a Spektrum AS12020 DSM X Receiver, Smart Fly 10 channel programmable power box, Electro Dynamics 5000 A123mAh for RX packs and a Electro Dynamics 2500 A123mAh for the Ignition, wing fold and landing gear.

The plane has a 110-inch span and  has an Automotive PPG paint job, with paint masks and nomenclature marking custom made by Pro Mark Graphics. I am now in the middle of the detail and weathering chore which is coming along nicely. Power will be from a Moki 215cc radial engine turning a Solo 3-blade prop. The Corsair is equipped with Sierra Scale retracts and includes a folding wing feature with a Down and Locked electric conversion.

  1. I am always shocked at what people will throw away . Maybe you should do an article on how to approach a rebuild from crash to re- maiden! What to keep, and what not to trust ( always send radio gear in for mfr check)

    1. Good suggestion Mark! Will have to find a bad pilot, who’s a good writer! :^)

  2. its just amazing how you can build a scale model like that, I think after spending that much time I would be afraid to fly it because of its beauty

  3. That is a lot of work and detailing. But it sure does look nice.

  4. I wish you all the best. Your plane is outstanding and what an accomplishment to a fabulous rebuild. Just that is a TOP GUN 1st place in my books. Your approach to weathering is the is another add on to my technique and a learning curve. You inspire me to keep flying.

You are a winner from the start.
    Good job.
