Scale 3-Blade propellers — Building a Ziroli Static Scale Kit — Part 4

Well, only did a little work on the propeller today. I stayed at home and went to the Dentist today then off to Top Gun tomorrow morning! So, here’s what the hub looks like after the white putty was sanded smooth.

The first layer of putty was done with the Squadron White plastic model variety and I let it dry overnight. It shrinks slightly and in some areas it tends to crack a bit if applied in very thick layers. But, it sands very nicely and comes off easily with 220 and 320 grit sandpaper.

The second layer of putty builds the thickness and helps round out the fillets. I use the Glazing RED putty and love the way it works. I applied it with a fingertip and it sticks great to the plastic and underlying white putty. The RED also shrinks a lot less and almost never cracks when you apply a healthy coat. This is the same putty I used to smooth the propeller blades.

It takes only about 4 to 6 hours for the RED putty to dry.

Here’s what the hub assembly looks like after a few minutes with some 320 sandpaper. I will be applying one more putty treatment to fill some of the deeper flaws, but after that, I’ll be shooting on some primer and then turn my attention to the propeller blades… Almost done!

There’s still some details like screws and nuts to be added but it is looking really good to me!

Stay Tuned.
