Great Planes Waco YMF-5D

Great Planes Waco YMF-5D

Flight Test by Michael York

I have long been a huge fan of the Waco YMF and was honored to review this absolutely gorgeous version by Great Planes. Starting from a clean sheet of paper, they wanted to ensure that their 1⁄5-scale version not only looked stunning, but would have outstanding flight characteristics and not be demanding to build. Well, Great Planes as certainly accomplished what it set out to do! The wood airframe is expertly covered with MonoKote and they did a great job replicating the beautiful paint scheme. There are several quality prepainted fiberglass parts that match the covering perfectly and also speed assembly time. The cowl, for example, is lightweight yet extremely tough and has the characteristic valve cover blisters already in place. For the landing gear, heavy-duty aluminum is used and surrounded by a fiberglass fairing to give it the proper dimensional look. An extensive hardware set that supplies

every nut and bolt needed for assembly is also included, as well as a fuel tank, motor mount and tires. Even Velcro and zip-ties are in there, so there is really no need to run to the hardware store. If you’ve built a larger ARF plane or two and are at an intermediate pilot level, you will have no problems whatsoever with this elegant bipe.

  1. Its a very nice plane .IT would fly great with my 26cc two stroke gas engine.I been flying scale planes for many years now !Love the hobby and like to fly scale warbirds too.I have a piper cherokee that looks so real in the air. This yellow waco is awesome and would love to have in my hanger. They did a great job on this one.Everybody should get one!!!!!!!!HAPPY FLYING SEE YOU AT THE FIELD+

  2. the waco ymf-5D IS A GREAT looking plane and i sure do love biplanes and i plan on geting me one for my hangar as soon as i can find out where to order one of cours i will fly it with electric power KEEP THE GREAT LOOKING PLANES COMING GOT TO GO FLYING SEE YOU AT THE FIELD…..

  3. I have about six flights on mine now and let me tell you Great Planes got it right.
I highly recommend a 4 stroke. I put a Thunder Tiger FS 1.30 and it is more then enough power.
One other modification I made was to eliminate the upper wing servos and use tie linkage between the upper and lower control surfaces as per the real thing. This is probably one of the best ARFs I have ever owned.
