Another Awesome “Red Tails” Mustang

Since we published our February 2012 issue of MAN with our Red Tails Mustang on the cover, we’ve been receiving a ton of email from readers telling us about their love the Red Tail Mustang. Our issue featured a How To article by Sr. West Coast editor John Reid showing how he converted his giant scale Aeroworks Mustang and we featured some highlights and behind the scenes info on the upcoming “Red Tails” movie.

Here’s just one of several letters we’ve recieved.

“It was a pleasure reading the Tuskegee Airmen article in the February 2012 issue of MAN. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen continues to inspire model enthusiasts around the country. I’m in the Atlanta, GA area and here’s a photo of my “Red Tail” P-51D.  It’s a Top-Flite Giant Scale ARC (Almost-Ready-to-Cover) kit. It’s powered by a DA-50 gas engine and covered with Flite-Metal aluminum covering, applied in panels, just like on the full-scale Mustang. I plan to customize the cockpit a bit more and add a few more Tuskegee Airmen markings.

  1. Bill Hence, Atlanta, GA, very nice airplane… I just bought the same kit and I have a friend that’s taking on the building project, we are also going to use the flite metal with red tail markings. I’m currently the President of the Dallas Ft. Worth Tuskegee Airmen Chapter, and I’m so glad to see that Model Airplane News is bringing to light the story of the Tuskegee Airmen’s history because it is truly unbelievable.

  2. Thanks Gordon. I’d love to see your airplane when it’s finished. I also have a smaller P-51 that I hope to finish up exactly like this one. It’s the Model-Tech kit with just over 60″ wingspan. I’ll be able to fly it more often than I do the larger Top-Flite kit. Let’s keep in touch and compare notes. Please email me at wehhm001@hotmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
