Flying the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior

Flying the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior

Get in the cockpit with Flight Journal editor-in-chief Budd Davisson! In this podcast, he shares why he’s crazy about the Lockheed 12 Electra Junior.

Only 126 Electra Juniors were made between 1936 and 1941, when production stopped at the outbreak of World War II. The all-metal, twin-engine planes were designed for use as small feeders for airlines, but most were used by companies for executive travel, as well as government officials and wealthy individuals. It’s a six-passenger aircraft, plus crew, and weighs in at 9,200 pounds fully loaded.

The Model 12A is powered by the 450-hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior SB radial engine and has a top speed of 225mph with a range of 800 miles.

  1. Great Podcast ! Wish there was an RC version of the 12A. Seems like there’s only a handful of civilian rc twins available like the B60, C310, YS-11,Baron 58, C410. Wish the Chinese mold makers would model the 12A, the Convair, Shrike Aero Commander,Piper Commanche, King Air 200, etc. I think twins are more twice th fun than twice the trouble

  2. It is a Lockheed aircraft not a Lockheed-Martin aircraft. Martin only got in the picture in 1997.

  3. I would love to see the Lockheed or Beechcraft in an RC version. At the least a 65 in. wing span.

  4. I’m sorry but I’ll never listen to this for 15 minutes

  5. Budd. Just fantastic. I’ve flown both. And yes. A Borsalino Fedora goes perfect with the plane. Wonderful and Accurate. The only thing missing from your description is a the Delivery of a Perfect Gin Martini handed to the owner-pilot as he gets into his Duesenberg.
