James May of Top Gear and The Grand Tour fame has a soft spot for RC model airplanes. In this video, he builds a glider based on a childhood model and then attempts to fly it across the English Channel! An hour long, this terrific short film is definitely worth your time!

Great stuff. But don’t forget that the British ED company, who made model diesel engines and early radio gear, crossed the channel, first with a radio control boat in 1953, then a plane, the Radio Queen, in 1954. The Radio Queen was taken off from England by a pilot on the ground then control transferred to a pilot in an Auster light aircraft. Radio contact was lost but the plane was found in a field and returned by a French farmer.
I have the DVD and when I watch it, it fills me with a sense of awe, excitement and admiration. There is only one other drama that gives me these feelings. It to is some what related to model aircraft. I refer to the older film, The flight of the phoenix. Both are the story of the magic of flight and those who make it happen, James’s story has a little of something else that a made up story could never have. It may be the hint that James’s dream is contagious, in a way that did not come across even in the flight of the phoenix.
