Perfect Project — Pitcairn PA-5 Mailwing

Perfect Project — Pitcairn PA-5 Mailwing

I have always loved this black and yellow mail plane hanging in the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. I bought a 3-view drawing from the NASM and have it imported into my CAD program. Would make a great project and at 1/5.5 scale, it would have a 72 inch span and would be perfect for the Evolution 770 7-cylinder radial engine. Hey! I can dream can’t I? :^)

There’s another example of the mailwing at the Ole’ Rhinebeck Aerodrome about 2 hours away…. Hmmm, anyone want to make a road trip? :^)

  1. I grew up near the Pitcairn Estate in Bryn Athyn Pennsylvania. The lore surrounding the airfield in Willow Grove, PA. (later Naval Air Station, Willow Grove) the connection to the AutoGyro and the collector joint which provided lift and which is essentially the same on modern helicopters and the Mailwing and it’s seperate but no less exciting stories of adventure and heroism as air mail became an established fact of life.
Wonderful times and remembrances for me, then and now.

    1. I grew up about 3 miles from Willow Grove Naval Air Station, which I spent a lot of my time at during the summer, originally was Pitcairn Field. My dad used to fly out of Pitcairn in the 20s – 30s (he was born in 1900) and knew the Pitcairns. I have recently gotten back into model aircraft building and have been looking for any version of the Mailwing but to no avail. I did find an PCA-2 Autogiro on EBay.
