Farewell to our friend, Frank Tiano

Farewell to our friend, Frank Tiano
It’s with great sadness that we just learned that our long time friend and RC scale legend Frank Tiano passed away late Monday night. All of us at Model Airplane News are deeply saddened and offer our sincerest of condolences to his family and friends. Frank’s love for scale RC airplanes was endless and he was a huge support of our hobby. The loss we all feel is deep and without measure.
His wife Carol commented that, “Not only was he a wonderful partner in life, but father to Lisa and Thea, grandfather of four, brother to Michele and Donna, brother-in-law, and Special Uncle to nine”. His favorite title lately was “Luca’s Daddy.”

Carol also said, “Frank valued his friendships, and cared for everyone… I know everyone will be wondering about the future of Florida Jets, and Top Gun. We will be contacting and posting updates shortly”.

  7. Frank and I met in 1983 when I opened my first hobby shop when I was 23, soon after he became my mentor in business and then a good friend, he would often refer to me as my son in the hobby business. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially in the hobby industry. Frank was a driving force for me, and I counted on his wisdom and he was always there to me his advice, like it or not. Over the phone in straight forward 60 second calls, that would end with, “I love you, good-bye”. Boy I will miss him and those calls.
My condolences to his lovely wife Carol and his family. God Bless FranK Tiano

  8. I feel deeply hurt by reading the news of his passing I never got the chance to meet him in person but all the articles in model airplane news about what he’s done for the hobby that I’ve been involved with for nearly 50 years I feel as though Ive known him and looked forward to really meeting him at his famous events, from what I’ve learned of him I know he would have wanted someone to continue to carry the torch and not let what he created pass away with him, I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and friends that knew him best, he will be surely missed by many.

  9. A legend in our time is an understatement ! Your straight, Frank and “Flying right!” Even here in Canada you influenced our wonderful hobby, especially scale modelling immensely.

  10. With my contacts with Frank was always honest and to the point. Sorry for late response and I do have regrets of his passing. Frank was always open and honest and did take time to respond. My highest regards to his family and I feel their pain. I tip me hat to the man and hope the best for his family and pray all will be to his favor in future.

  11. I had the opportunity to meet Frank Tiano back in the late 90’s. I was in my late 20’s or early 30’s and down in Florida on business. I had been in RC for a few years and had just gotten into giant scale. I had reached out that I would be in the area and he invited me to stop by his house/shop. When I arrived I was greeted at the garage door by none other than Charlie Chambers. He had just recently won Top Gun with his P-61. Needless to say for someone new to hobby and knowing Top Gun this was a real treat. Stepping into the shop I was met with the man himself. I can’t remember everyone else that was there that day but there was another young guy who worked for Frank…I think his name was Peter or something like that and there was another Top Gun competitor from Denver there I think his name was Brian…I want to say Brian O’Mere or something like that. We ended up going to lunch to a place nearby where everyone knew Frank and I spent the rest of the afternoon talking RC and learning he had once been in the car business in NY sold out and retired to Florida. It was great spending time with everyone…I was in heaven. Charlie Chambers said he was an airline pilot and I think Brian owned a car dealership in Denver. It was just one of my best memories in my RC world. Sorry to hear of his passing. Thoughts and prayers to the family…
