Road to Top Gun — Amazing Flying Razor

This impressive electric powered, giant scale Fokker D.VIII is the work of Dave Perrone. This year will be Dave’s first time at Top Gun and he will be competing with his flying razor in the Expert class.  The Fokker D.VIII is Dave’s most favorite airplane all due to him seeing and watching Brian Coughlin fly his full size replica at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome as a kid in the early 90’s. That said, Dave wanted to recreate the D.VIII as closely as possible to the full-size with the help of documentation provided by Fokker-Team-Schorndorf or Achim Engels.

Fokker D.VIII

The model started with an extremely accurate Glenn Torrance Models kit that he added to all the very fine details. It is 1/3-scale in size, has an 114-inch wingspan and is covered in GTM’s 100% linen lozenge fabric. The wing which took a year to build has 44 pieces of .5mm thick plywood for covering. The wing is stained with the same stains from the original manufacture back in 1918 and many coats of shellac. The snake and rabbit is a scheme which is not often modeled. There is only one picture that has surfaced of the airplane which is believed to have been captured by the French toward the end of the war. The D.VIII is believed to be of 8 Marine FeldJagdstaffe but the pilot is unknown.

The airplane took Dave 3-years to complete and is flown with a Futaba 10CAG radio. Power is from an AXI 5360/20 Special brushless motor swinging a custom-cut scale 30×20 Axial prop from Seidel.
