Today in Aviation History: F-86 sets a world speed record!

Today in 1951, Colonel Fred J Ascani set a 635.686mph world speed record in an F-86F Sabre. He received the Mackay Trophy for flight, an award established in 1911 for the most meritorious flight of the year by an Air Force person, persons or organization.
