Top Gun Free Flight Scale — A new competition category!

Top Gun Free Flight Scale — A new competition category!

Well, we all have come to expect surprises from Frank Tiano, AKA the Father of the Top Gun Scale Invitational held each year at Lakeland, FL, and this year is no exception. For the 2016 event, Frank has added a serious Free Flight competition for anyone attending the event. These aren’t your every day Free Flight models as Frank is always thinking big!

With a 36 inch minimum span for monoplanes and a 24 inch span for biplanes, this event is for rubber powered non-RC projects. There will be static judging and of course a mass flight event as well. And the prizes are promised to be something special indeed.

Here’s my project for the event. Since I am planning to compete in the Sportsman class this year with my 33% scale Fokker Triplane built from a Balsa USA kit, I thought I would show up with a mini version of my Triplane in the same paint scheme. There a few months left before the event so I have to kick it into high gear to finish off the little 25 inch free flight Triplane.

Removable cowling will allow easy rubber power replacement and winding.

All the hardware is from Peck Polymers and the airplane is built from a Pat Tritle set of plans. The laser cut parts are from manzanolaser.com. I also made a set of 3D printed rims for the spoked wheels produced by Shapeways.com.

For the markings, I had a set of decals made by Cal-Grafx and the graphics are great and match the big RC Triplane (and the full-size triplane) perfectly!

So please stay tuned as I will update this post, and also as we get information from the other Top Gun Free Flighters, we will post it here on the MAN website
