The avalanche was performed many times by Katherine Stinson before WW1.
True Dave, many of the basic aerobatic maneuvers have their roots from WW1 dog fighting.
I really like this video presentation of the avalanche. It is easier to see the timing and rate of each part of the manoeuvre instead of trying to build this picture from text.
