This year’s Western States Electric Fly was held at Apollo XI field in Encino, CA during the weekend of June 5-7, 2009. The event drew a crowd of over 1,000 with some 125+pilots. A large vendor area had many of the visitors perusing their goods throughout the three days.
Most of the three days was devoted to open flying with some noontime demos from the attending manufacturers, but even the noontime stuff was flying throughout the day. It was very obvious just how popular ducted-fan (DF) jets have become. At any point throughout the day, there was at least one DF jet flying. Thanks to all the advancements in technology in this field, it was clear that people enjoyed this segment of the hobby.
The Western States Electric Fly is a great event to attend whether you are a participant or just there to see the latest—you will be guaranteed a fun day! Be sure to add it to your calendar next year.
