Model Airplane Workshop Tip: Installing Skis

Model Airplane Workshop Tip: Installing Skis

Well, don’t look now, but the winter is fast approaching. Instead of packing your models away for storage, why not extend your flying season and embrace the white stuff with Du-Bro Snowbird Skis!? Like the hard working bush pilots of the outback and great Northwest, attaching skis to your RC airplane can turn any semi-flat area like a pasture (or a lake!), into a cold weather runway. But doing it correctly is the first order of business.

Many RC pilots strap on the DU-BRO Snowbird and/or the Park Flyer Snow Skis and prep their planes for fun in the snow. But this can bring some questions on the proper method of attaching the skis and so, DU-BRO has produced another useful How To video to show you the best way to get this done so you and your favorite sport flyer can be ready when the snow flies!

  1. Norway, is the home of the ski. Thank you for sharing, and hoping for a better winter, with snow and frozen lakes this winter.

    1. What aircraft is being shown in the photos (yellow and blue)?

      1. Magic 3D, I think Modeltech put it out

  2. I’ve always wanted to do this on a 3D plane, but the tailwheel has never really had a good option. What do guys do for the tail wheel and a ski setup? Seems to me this gets overlooked. I think my tail wheel get caught in the crusty snow and get ripped off or worse, it won’t glide like the front skis.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    1. Hey mike i fly a tower uproar with a 10cc gas engine on skis you dont need to worry about the tailwheel the plane has such a short rollout it doesnt hurt performance at all ive had a blast in sub zero weather hear in ohio tha past few weeks and the gas engine runs great easy to start in bitter cold last year i flew a 50cc extra with the same dubro skis that worked out well too but the uproar fits in the car so no assembly needed at the field good luck and remember FLY LOW MY BROTHER

  3. The springs eventually break. Are there replacements available?

  4. I have attempted to fly with skis mentioned above but failed to rotate in
    any snow more than 2″deep.

Built skis myself appx.twice the size shown.
Built a “cute” little ski for tail wheel.

Air plane was forty size trainer-4 plus inches of snow.

  5. I’ve been flying with these skis for years. Even have them on an 11# plane with no problems. Give the bottoms of the skis a quick shot of wd40 to keep snow from sticking to them and give you real short takeoffs
